Opening the first box, Jeanie lifted the small crystal bottle with a fluted
neck. Inside amber liquid gleamed. Etched on the outside in a
flourish script "Vamp" read clearly white against the golden
liquid. A single white brow rose at the name on the bottle. With a

Conversation with Author Andi Marquette

Hello Andi! It is a pleasure to get the opportunity to speak with you and get to know you a bit better! I've really enjoyed working with you and R.G. on your Wick'd Feature for SKULLS AND CROSSBONES, which really is a unique idea to have an anthology of Women Pirate stories. How did that idea come about?

Howdy, Jfay. It’s been a blast working with you and I hope tons of people buy sexy Skulls and Crossbones candles with the awesome “Walk the Plank” scent so you can fund your secret vacations to Jamaica.

Anyway, my colleague, R.G. Emanuelle (you can find her at www.rgemanuelle.com), and I had been wanting to do an anthology of some sort together, but we were trying to figure out what kind. This was over a year ago. Both of us come from editing, writing, and publishing backgrounds, and I knew R.G. would be a good co-editor with me because she’s the more organized of us (HA HA!). So I was throwing ideas out—vampires. But we both thought that there were a lot of vampire anthologies out there, including those of the lesbian persuasion, so we kind of shelved that one. And we figured there were a lot of erotica anthologies out there, so we sort of shelved that idea, too. I was getting kind of frustrated trying to come up with an idea and one day, R.G. calls me up out of the blue and says: “PIRATES!” Seriously. No “hi, how are you.” Just “PIRATES.”

And I said: “Yeah, so?” And she said: “No, Andi. For the anthology. Women pirates!” See, R.G. was calling me from a bookstore and she was browsing the history section, if I remember correctly, which had some books on pirates and it just clicked and she called me right then. And I said: “Ohmigod! TOTALLY! PIRATES! WOMEN PIRATES!” And thus the idea was born. It was R.G.’s idea, no matter how coy she tries to be about it. J And for real. Pirates have kind of a universal appeal, don’t you think? Both R.G. and I like a good adventure story (which may or may not involve sex), and we like it when some awesome ass-kicking chick is the lead character, so an anthology of women pirates opened up a lot of possibilities for us.

How many authors were involved in the SKULLS AND CROSSBONES Anthology?

We put out a call in February 2009 and closed the submissions September 1, 2009. We got around 75 submissions. Of those, we picked 18. There are 20 stories total in the anthology, including one contribution from me, and one from R.G. Thus there are 18 additional contributors, most from the US, but other contributors reside in the UK, Canada, and Australia. Thus the international appeal of pirates!

What is the name of your story in the book and what type of Woman Pirate does your story portray?

My contribution in Skulls and Crossbones is titled “Devil’s Bargain.” The pirate in question there is Captain Nefi, who…well, she’s what I call a “vampirate.” Or vampire-pirate, if you will. Basically, the story deals with an English noblewoman who wants revenge on somebody really badly, and the price she’s asked to pay for it.

You now reside in Colorado where you grew up, but you were born in New Mexico and have worked and studied there as well, correct? How are you enjoying life now in beautiful Colorado?

Yes, I was born in Albuquerque but grew up in a rural ranching town in Colorado, where I graduated from high school. My first two academic degrees are from Colorado universities, and then I moved back to Albuquerque in 1992 and did a Ph.D at the University of New Mexico and worked in publishing (yes, I’m a geeky academic type). I left New Mexico in 2004 and went to Nashville, Tennessee, where I became a little-known country singer. KIDDING. I was teaching at a community college. But I did kind of think it would be cool to be a country singer for a little bit. I came back to Colorado in 2008 and worked at a news magazine as an intern all while I was writing more novels, short stories, and freelance editing. Then I based in Colorado and continued freelance editing and writing. Colorado is a great state, but I believe you can find cool things anywhere you are. I am a Westerner inside and out, but I’m open to possibility and I am, by nature, kind of a wanderer, so wherever I end up next, I’ll find cool things about it.

And what is this strange obsession with New Mexico chile to which you refer? I got a kick out of that one!

Ha ha! You went to my website! Ah, New Mexico chile. Now, let me explain this culinary delight for those of you who have not had the pleasure of dishes like green chile stew or red chile sauce on your enchiladas. New Mexican cuisine is an amalgam of Native American, Spanish (as in 16^th- and 17^th-century conquistadores and their accompanying settlers/families), and later Mexican/other Latin American peoples (19^th-century on). In New Mexico, “chile” with an “e” on the end refers to the fruit of the chile plant—i.e. those long green peppers you find in the grocery store. In most stores, those chiles come from California and they’re called “Anaheim peppers.” In NM, they’re grown and developed in the state at places like Hatch farms (hence references to Hatch chiles).

So from these chile plants New Mexicans make the sauces that give their cuisine such a special, different character. Green chile sauce is derived from the roasted flesh of the chile fruit, while red chile sauce is derived from fruit that is more ripe. There’s a difference in the taste between the two. Green chiles tend to be a little more tangy than red, and red has a heavier, earthier flavor than green. Sometimes New Mexicans will add chunks of pork to their green chile sauces, and those sauces are ladled liberally over huevos rancheros, tamales, enchiladas…just about everything. In fact, when you’re eating in a restaurant that specializes in New Mexican food, your server will ask you “red or green?” That is actually the official state question. It means “do you want red chile sauce or green chile sauce poured over your food?” You can actually have both, and those in the know will respond “Christmas, please.” Red and green together. Christmas. Get it?

There’s a big difference between chile with an “e” on the end and chili with an “i” on the end. Chili with the “i” often refers to “Tex-Mex” chili, which is a red sauce that’s tomato-based. That chili includes beans (usually pinto), green bell peppers, onions, garlic, ground beef, and usually cheese tossed on top. So if you visit New Mexico and you order a bowl of chile with an “e”, it’s not going to be what you expect. You’ll get a bowl of usually red chile sauce thickened with flour that looks sort of like V-8 juice, served with a tortilla on the side. Green chile stew might be more to your liking—that’s green chile-based, and it usually has potatoes, onions, garlic, some tomato, and chunks of pork though I like to make mine either vegetarian or with turkey.

If you read my mysteries set in New Mexico (those include Land of Entrapment, State of Denial, and The Ties that Bind), you’ll get an introduction of sorts to the food and culture of the state. My obsession is creating the most interesting dishes with chile that I can. I’m also a secret foodie and I love trying new things out with regard to dishes. Dang. I’m hungry…

I was also fascinated to learn that you have worked as an archeologist -- that is so cool! That is definitely a field in which I have a lot of interest myself, although I've never really pursued it as you have. What types of excavations have you worked on? And where?

Yes, I have a master’s degree in anthropology with an emphasis in archaeology. Archaeology is considered a subfield within anthropology, so that’s why technically my MA is in anthropology and not specifically archaeology (yadda yadda yadda…heee heee). I’ve done a lot of survey work—which means slogging through forests, underbrush, and along roadways looking for evidence of human occupation or activity. Or, as I often observed:

“Holy crap, I can’t even get through this damn bunch of trees. Who the hell would LIVE here? Hey, look! A deer!”

I spent a summer with the Forest Service in northwestern Colorado doing a lot of foot survey and photographing and then I worked for a bit as a contract archaeologist for the Colorado Department of Transportation. I did a lot of cataloging of artifacts from previous excavations and also a lot of surveying all over the state. And I was an assistant crew chief on a dig at an Ancient Puebloan site in western New Mexico, near the Zuni Reservation. “Ancient Puebloan” refers to “Anasazi” and any more, “Ancient Puebloan” is the term in use to describe that particular culture in the prehistoric Southwest. I also have a fascination with forensic anthropology and criminalistics, so I’ve involved myself in crime scene study and the application of anthropology to that. That would be part of my “dark side.” MUAH HA HA!

And now Andi, I'm going to get a little more personal with you -- wink, wink! Here is the one question I always have to ask -- What is the most shocking fact about you that your fans would be surprised to find out??

Y’know, I thought a while on this and honestly, there’s probably nothing that would shock anyone because I am kind of a nut anyway and rather effusive in what I’m up to. Some people are surprised to find out I have the academic background I do. Others think it’s interesting that I have a secret food fascination. Something that makes people laugh and look at me disbelievingly is when I tell them that I have never smoked a cigarette and never done any kind of illicit drug. Not even once. I mean, how much more goody-goody can you get? That’s pretty dorky, huh? And coming from someone who did an impromptu campout for a week on a nude beach on the island of Lesvos, that little tidbit is usually pretty surprising. Um…I’m a radio and sometimes-live event DJ. That sometimes surprises people. Oh, here’s something else. I grew up on a goat farm. Our herd (though small) was registered with the American Dairy Association and I did, in fact, show goats at the county fair through 4-H when I was in high school. Yeee-ha! From goat farm to Lesvos. Hmmm. Maybe that’s my memoir. Such a good metaphor!

Do you have any other hobbies that you enjoy besides going on archeological excavations and obsessing on New Mexico chile?

I haven’t done archaeology in a long time. I did my Ph.D. in history, and spent a lot of years researching the history of extremist movements and ideology in this country. Yeah, I know. Where do you even BEGIN deconstructing that? HAR! I read a lot. And I write a lot, too. I like cooking and experimenting with different cuisines. I’m also pretty outdoorsy, so I hike and camp and things like that. I love mountain biking, but I haven’t had much of a chance to do that because this has been a loooooooooong winter. I love traveling, too, and at some point, I’m going to go do some wandering around Australia and New Zealand. J

And some day I’m going to fly a space ship. Hee hee.

Has there been any one person that has had a profound impact on your life? Either professionally or personally?

I’m of the opinion that anyone can have an impact, if you’re paying attention. “Profound.” Hmmm. Usually one doesn’t know it’s profound until way after the fact. And whatever he or she said or did might have seemed entirely innocuous at the time and then POW you realize years later that you changed course as a result of a connection you had with someone, no matter how brief. Holy hell, that sounds kind of woo-woo! I can’t really answer this one because honestly, I’m grateful for everyone I meet and I learn something from most everyone, including the animals in my life. I’ve learned a lot from my dog, for example, about patience, affection, and going with the flow and enjoying each day as it unfolds. And then there are people who I’ve never met who have been inspiring, through the work they do, the lives they lead, or the things they write. Inspirations and impacts are everywhere. We just need to pay attention.

In how many different genres do you write? And what are they?

Um…let’s see. Mystery, sci fi, paranormal/urban fantasy (on occasion), contemporary fiction. That’s about four. But I also have unpublished work in fantasy and romance.

Any new books in the works for you?

Always. I’m currently working on the 4^th book in the New Mexico series and I just turned in the second in my sci fi series (that’s called the Far Seek Chronicles) to the publisher. I’m toying with an urban fantasy/werewolf thingie but I’m not sure where that project will end up going. The manuscript is complete, but I’m not satisfied with it (typical writer, huh?). I’ll be writing a third for the Far Seek Chronicles in the next few months or so and I’m working on some short stories for spec fic mags and anthologies. There’s always something to write! Oh, and R.G. and I hope to do another anthology but we’re not sure what it’ll be. I’m sure she’ll call me up and say something like “SEA MONSTERS!” and away we’ll go. Stay tuned on that!

How about any upcoming events that you'll be attending where your fans may get a chance to meet you?

I’m scheduled to appear on Staten Island at Bent Pages Bookstore May 15^th (4-6 PM) for an author chit-chat. That’s a Saturday, by the way. I’ll also be in attendance at the annual Golden Crown Literary Society convention (GCLS, for those in the know). That’s June 3^rd through 6^th in Orlando and it’s an organization geared toward lesbian fiction—books that feature women who identify as lesbian as protagonists. You don’t have to be a lesbian to go, friends. Just have an appreciation of books that feature lesbians as main characters. My first sci fi novel, Friends in High Places, is up for an award in spec fic at that conference, which is way cool.

Conversation with Vampire Author Wayne Mallows

Hello Wayne! It has certainly been a pleasure to work with you on your Blood of Whitechapel project for your new book, Whitechapel Road. I'd like to discuss more about your book and also learn more about you, as it seems that you have a very fascinating story yourself ~

Thanks so much for having me and wanting to do a feature on moi, so awesome!

I'd like to begin by asking how your now famous vampire character, Aremis, first come to be? Before the birth of the book that is --

Well, Aremis began his life a long time ago but never really had a name. I would have to guess that he became somewhat official in the early 1990's when I wanted to create a very realistic vampyre for a haunted house I was working on.

I found over the first couple of years that when people would interact with this newly created fellow they wanted to know so much about him that I had to actually sit down and figure out where he was actually from. You see, we never really discussed that much in the creation process.

So what I started, we then finished together.

Perhaps you may have heard some authors say, "the book essentially wrote itself", well this was definitely true of both Aremis and the main female character. What I had started they soon helped to co-create and thus they are most certainly believable characters.

There were actually times when I was struggling with the main female character

and the writing was going so slowly. It was at that time she quite literally told me, "its going so poorly dear fellow because I'm not like that which you are writing".

Now, Whitechapel Road is a story that is based upon how Aremis became a vampire, but you've also added a very interesting twist on a famous, albeit gruesome, part of history. Please tell us how you came about joining Aremis' story and Jack the Ripper historical data into a very unique tale all your own.

Initially, I had never intended to write a book at all, merely create a very unique vampyre for a haunted house. The whole idea of a book came one morning when I preparing to give a talk on creating a character for a group of drama students at a high school. As I wrote down some notes on how I built Aremis into being, I thought; 'this would actually make a great read'.

The idea for tying it in with Jack the Ripper came to me when I was thinking about how I could make a believable character that much more realistic. The answer was in linking him to historic events. The trick was then finding an event that was both well known and had within its historic identity a level of mystery and intrigue.

The Ripper Murders had all of that and all within a relatively small area of London England.

You've done extensive research on Jack the Ripper, haven't you? What have you found that leads you to the belief that it possibly could have been a deranged woman who was actually committing the murders?

Well now, extensive is all relative, isn't it? I spent months going over police reports, autopsy finding, eye witness accounts and the like, but there are others out there who have spent much of thier lives delving into every nook and cranny of the cases.

I liked the idea of a woman being the Ripper as it simply wasn't something that was entertained by police at the time.

During that time, the time of the Ripper Murders, women, especailly prostitutes, were very cautious about any male stranger they might encounter, but another female, dressed much at they were, I doubt they would think much of it at all.

Common clothing for a prostitute at that time would be dark in colour as is hid the dirt well. Washing clothing or even one's self was not a common occurence. Blood on black clothing would not be noticed and a woman seen walking the back streets of Whitechapel in the wee hours of the morning would not get a second glance by the police or any of the vigilanti groups that had sprung up to try and catch this mad-'man'.

Do you see there possibly being more Aremis themed novels in the future? If so, any ideas as to where Aremis may travel next? Any more famous encounters with historical events or people?

There will be two more books with Aremis in them, beyond that I can not say for sure. There is nothing worse for a character than to take a prolonged trail into bordom amongst the readers. I'll just have to see what the future holds and what Aremis himself has to say about it when the time comes.

The next book will move forward in time to somewhere near present day where science and police technologies are far superior to that of 1888 and yet despite these improvements they find themselves face to face with the same issue that stumped their ancestors some 120+ years earlier.

Should be jolly good fun, wouldn't you agree?

I read in your biography that you're also involved in special effects makeup -- How cool! What all have you done and what projects have you been involved with?

I've been out of that now about 8 years. The last "official" project I worked on was for a Film Festival creation called Blood Bank. I was originally called in as a "vampyre expert" so to lend my thoughts on what a vampyre bite would look like and so on. This quickly evolved into having me actually doing the nasty make-up for the film.

Most recently I've been involved at Cedar Fair's theme park, Canada's Wonderland working with them to create two very real and very frightening vampyres. That was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it very much. In addition to that, as I mentioned earlier, I do work with students to give them their first real look at theatrical special effects make-up as well as what it takes to make a believable character.

I will be speaking at the Canadian Haunters Convention May 9th-11th on that very topic, creating a memorable character for your home haunt.

I'm very interested in learning more about your haunted Victorian B&B! Do you know who your resident ghost(s) may be?

Well then, you'll just have to come and stay here with us some weekend and experience it for yourself first hand.

It was built in 1872, (a few years before the Ripper Murders) by the Bampfield family and remained in the Bampfield family up to 1969, just amazing. James Bampfield built this, the second family home, for his wife Margaret so to be closer to his work and the church. Although built in Victorian times it was built in Gothic Revival Architecture with tall pointed windows, heavy gables with large gingerbreading and a tower with wrought iron roof irons.

As to the spirits that reside here I refer to the place as being wonderfully haunted and what I mean by that is this; unless you're very gifted you would be hard pressed to notice anything amiss here. I have been told that the spirits that live here with us are very much at peace with their death and simply enjoy being at the place they built and lived in.

From what we've been able to get thus far there are a number of spirits that come and go at our home. Now it's difficult to figure out who they all are as they all had the same names. They were all John's or James. Margaret's and Anne's Bampfield

So we tend to lean toward thinking of them at the first ones, James and Margaret.

They don't bother us at all but on occasion we do here footsteps and doors opening and closing when we know there is no one home but us.

We had a paranormal investigation team come to the house in September and stay with us for about ten hours. They managed to get some wonderful footage of orbes that would respond to requests made of them along with unbelievable audio recordings.

The mediums that accompanied them told us much about the history of the place and acted as spokes person for the spirits.

It was quite and incredible evening.

How do your guests react to knowing that your B&B is haunted? Maybe it's the haunting that lures guests in?

Guests are funny about it. Some love it and others do not. I've yet to have a guest come and tell me they have to leave or that they had a dreadful nights sleep.

Our web site says nothing about it being haunted because we don't wish to scare off people by having them thnking they're going to be staying at a place where the bed floats and the taps turn on and off by themselves, its just not that sort of a place. We will have another web site some time this summer whereby if someone is actuall looking for a haunted place to stay in Niagara Falls Ontario, they will find us, while the rest of the people will simply find our regular web site.

Another interesting fact about you is that you actually drive around in a hearse! How did that come about? I bet you turn a lot of heads, especially when perhaps dressed as Aremis!

I have loved funeral coaches ever since I was a kid. I was big into Halloween, go figure. I always thought that you would need a special license to drive or even purchase one so I never bothered to look into it. It wasn't until about 2002 when a friend contacted me about having seen a hearse on a police lot and that I should go look at it. Long story short, they got the car as donation and didn't want it so after a brief interview they gave it to me, WOW! It was a 1981 Cadillac Superior Hearse, and it was in rough shape. I spent some money on it and fixed it up and I drove that until 2006 when it just rusted out and was having all sorts of other issues. After that I found a 1979 Cadillac S&S in Cincinatti which I bought. That is the one you have on the web site with the bats on it. That turns some heads. We don't have to go very far in that car before the cameras are out. It doesn't matter if we're stopped, it parked, or at speed on the highway, flashes are going off.

I also own a 1965 Cadillac S&S Victoria that is black and pretty much in original condition. I picked that one up on ebay in 2008 from Wisconsin, that was a steal!

It also turns heads but because it looks like its still in service it doesn't create the stir the silver one does.

When my girlfriend and I would go to work at Canada's Wonderland we would take the 79 with the bats on it and be already dressed to work, as vampyres, and I can assure you, having two vampyres arriving at the biggest haunted attraction in Ontario in a hot rod funeral coach simply blew peoples minds. Everyone from security to fellow actors to the paying customer were more than a little apprehensive upon our arrival at the main gates.

Alright Wayne, here's the fun question I have to ask -- What is the most shocking fact about you that would really surprise your fans?

I sleep in a coffin....

Bet your eyes popped just then! lol

I don't know, there's so much that would probably surprise the fans.

I'm a romantic guy, I really don't like going to the carnival-style haunted houses, (real ones are ok though), I'm a nervous passenger, I hate to fly, I have a 6th sense seems to be getting better with my age, I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke, I was picked on something horrible as a child and teen and in part, it was due to the isolation I felt that I began to create the vampyre in order to have someone to identify with being so alone and so shunned.

I hate brussel sprouts.

Do you have any other interesting little hobbies that you enjoy, besides creating and writing about vampires, running a haunted B&B, driving hearses, doing theatrical makeup -- what else could there be?!

I was going to say... How much more could there be?

I ride a motorcycle an have been a licensed motorcycle mechanic for years now. I taught a number of night school courses back in the late 90's that made motorcycle mechanics easier to understand for those who wanted to know how their ride actually worked.

I haven't been out on my bike for a couple of years though, just too much going on.

We put this collection together because we both love pirate stories and

NOTES ON DEBAUCHERY from I, DEBAUCHEE author WILLIAM MALTESE

Upon first contracting with MLR Press for its publication of my “I” series of m/m books, it was always my intention that my I, DEBAUCHEE (just released) should be the first in the line-up, if just because of my long-time fascination with the subject matter: Extreme indulgence in sensual pleasures; dissipation.

My initial fascination revolved around my early penchant for all things “Roman Empire”; that time frame one of extreme indulgences wherein debauchery was, more often than not, synonymous with lust and gluttony that included banquets with courses of humming-bird tongues, dormice … of carp fattened on the human flesh of murdered slaves … of wild boars stuffed with live thrushes that took wing when the beast’s belly was sliced open … of rabbits with swan wings attached to resemble Pegasus … with special rooms (vomitoria) for periodic purging that allowed the feasting to continue, non-stop, for days on end … all accompanied by marathon fornication among the diners.

Later, of course, I learned of libertines, during all periods of history, who used food as if it somehow signified sexual prowess. The infamous Marquise de Sade, renowned for his debauchery, fed prostitutes chocolate laced with the dangerous aphrodisiac Spanish fly before masochistically and sexually making short use of them.

Excessive dining, of course, not always needed to definite the term that, likewise, can include … being led morally astray or into dishonesty and vicious practices; corruption leading to loss of chastity; excessive indulgences; licentiousness, drunkenness, bad habits; promiscuity…

My first inclination was to write I, DEBAUCHEE as a period piece, set in ancient Rome, or in some decadent royal court of pre-revolutionary France. And while hot and heavy sex in my novel occurs in such places as an Italian island grotto, the French Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, even in the dungeon of a Rumanian lodge, and in the inner-sanctum of the ruined Transylvanian castle of Count Dracula, I decided that there was already so much written about the debauchery of past times, but so little written about the ongoing debauchees of the present.

While true debauchery requires great deals of money to back it up, purchase its pleasures, grease the wheels to make it happen (who dares be a great debauchee if he or she needs always be fearful of being caught, reprimanded, even arrested, and jailed?) … and while the present world economy is presently flushed so far down the proverbial toilet bowl that it has many mistakenly believing that great wealth, and the excesses that go with it, are possibly things of the past … I know for a fact that there are people out there, still, with so much money, power, and influence, that they make the debauchees of earlier times, including mere emperors, kings, marquises, and counts, look mere novices in comparison.

However, with the inclination of today’s readers of m/m fiction to be so romantically inclined, and more likely to prefer their reading material, even of debauchees, not so far off the scale as to have stomachs turned by the kind of excesses that are not only still possible but can, and do, occur, daily, within a segment of today’s populations that can afford them, I’ve concentrated on contemporary characters who are a tad more sympathetic than many of their counterparts, and whose appetites are not so far different from yours and mine as to seem totally alien. I’ve even, hopefully, instilled within them a sensibility about love that has them yearn to experience it, even as they realize that their ability to indulge every conceivable sensation, can, and does, make true love for them far more difficult to achieve than pleasures more easily and quickly purchased by merely opening their pocketbooks.

Of course, by way of supplementing, this tale … of all that money can buy … I’ve once again called upon the creative genius of wax-artisan Jfay, to provide me with an “I, DEBAUCHEE CANDLE” to not only be included within the story-line but to personify, universally, the kind of money-is-no-object excesses that this story and its characters are all about. Once again, she has come through, this time with the visual epitome of an object one merely needs look at to conjure all sorts of candle-lit orgies of sheer debauchery in palaces, castles, mansions, and within island grottos, where food and wine flow in abundance, and where the naked and near naked super-wealthy cavort in sheer licentiousness and amusement, while the rest of the world, and its less fortunate, are pretty much ignored..

Cascades of blood-like liquid flow are projected on all empty wall space, accompanied by the amplified pulse of an actual heartbeat.

And so the adventure begins for Jfay and her candles -- Whisked away by the Great Maltese (better known as Author William Maltese of International Fame) to far away places and on fantastical, and many times erotic and paranormal adventures!

Since the onslaught of the DRAQUAL VAMPYRE CHRONICLES and the candles that were designed for the entire theme and story-line, I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work further with Mr. Maltese on other exciting projects and have had the honor of my candles as well as myself, in my Jfay persona, make appearances in subsequent story-lines.

I'd like to share this candle and story-line adventure with you as we have traveled with Mr. Maltese thus far........

Our chairs are grouped around a round coffee table upon which sits opened beer bottles punctuating a bed of ice cupped within a large punch bowl parenthesized by two smaller bowls almost overflowing with spicy home-made chips.

“You’ve a candle color definitely in mind?” she asks and drinks some of her beer straight from the bottle.

“I’m thinking black, maybe representing the dark and the unknown but, to be quite candid, I’m not quite sure why I think it should be black; just that it should be,” Kenneth says. “If you can, please, include at least some brown, since I have an unmistakable feeling that those we seek are buried in the ground. You might slip in a bit of white by way of insinuating my hoped-for enlightenment.”

And from FLICKER to "Ludus Scaenicus Mortis Rubrae", which is a short story featured in MLR Press' Anthology, RED, a clever homage to Edgar Allen Poe’s infamous The Masque of the Red Death, which puts two handsome and horny aristocratic young male lovers among a company of ill-fated revelers locked within the castellated walls of Prince Prospero’s fortified abbey … the latter with rooms a-flicker with Mistress Jfay’s candles:

The progress of each and every is impeded by the many twists and turns of the Abbey’s rabbit-warren maze of rooms, tiny and big … corridors, wide and narrow … between us and the Imperial Suite. The lighting that accompanies our journey is just as erratic as the interior landscape we traverse. Some spaces have so little that they require either a familiarity or an actual dragging of a hand along one wall to make a successful crossing from one side to the other. In bizarre counterpoint, one of the smallest has seven very impressively large deep-red candles, each a-droll with red-orange wax, and smelling — to my surprise at Mistress Jfay, Candle-maker to the Prince, and me possibly sharing a similar passion — of blood-red oranges; the septet’s combined candle power is sufficient to illuminate a whole auditorium.

So, where shall our adventures take us next?

Well, I've designed a Mysterious and Magical Candle which possesses the captured soul of an avenging warrior meant to be a beautiful, yet deadly wedding gift for an evil king, as well as numerous other candle renderings designed to accompany many other Maltese works of genius.

Just recently I've learned that Jfay candles will be making yet another appearance soon in a new Maltese work in progress titled, I DEBAUCHEE -- So be sure to stay tuned for this one -- And it is not to be for the faint of heart from what I've been privileged to see. It is going to be a stunning Maltese no holds barred masterpiece, I'm sure!

This is Kenneth’s candle, and I’ve inadvertently intruded; I’m supposedly there as an interested bystander soaking up pointers. “I am sorry,” I say. “That just slipped out.”

“Pine and clove?” Jfay queries for clarification.

“Just pine,” I say. “I hope there’ll be no more such uncontrollable outbursts on my part. I don’t know what got into me.”

Chapter 61 From the FLICKER: Teen Warrior Saga

Gregory enters through the open window and immediately sits in the chair next to the bed. It’s becoming more and more difficult for him to fly. Being airborne takes way more time, effort, and concentration, these days; so much so, that he almost didn’t make this trip. In the end, though, he comes here, hoping to provide some normalcy to his life which is suddenly, once again, topsy-turvy.

How ironic that the normalcy he so desperately wants now isn’t one and the same with the normalcy he wanted when he first became a vampire. Back then, suddenly forced to endure entirely on blood for sustenance, he’d desperately longed for a return to regular meals. Now, however, it just seems plain weird that he’s somehow being weaned from that very blood which was his sole life-source for close to a hundred years.

He looks at the woman on the bed. Rhonda Wesmore is twenty-six, very pretty, in the very best of physical health and perfection, all from natural diet and good exercise. She teaches yoga twice a week, vascular-cardio routines three times a week, and is a personal trainer at the local Gold’s Gym.

There had been a time when Gregory had assumed that feasting on the blood of any and all athletes was the way to assure his own continued well-being. He’d been wrong, of course. In times when even well-respected athletes shot up steroids, in order to bulk-up, Gregory had found himself just as negatively effected by those drugs as the ones who took them. Like they, he became moody and sullen, short on temper and quickly to anger. In his mad determination to have more and more of tainted athletic blood, how many members of that Russian sports facility in Vladmostic had he sucked dry before he’d finished? So many had been converted by him to vampirism, they had run out of new blood and had turned on each other to feed. What a mess that had been, the local authorities having been unable to cope and needing to call in the military. The only positive thing having been Gregory’s realization that he needed more control over his life, and more stability in his life, than his addiction to steroid-laced blood provided. Oh, but his withdrawal, had been anything but pleasant.

Since then, he came to look upon Rhoda’s blood as dessert, especially since she’s taken to eating Xoçai Chocolate. If she enjoys the natural benefits of all that antioxidant-rich açai berry and cacao which keeps her blood pressure and her blood sugar under control, where pigging out on regular chocolate would never do the same, Gregory, from first suck knew her blood was something special above and beyond the blood of all the other regulars upon whom he feasts. He knows that if he isn’t tempted to drink Rhoda’s blood now — and he isn’t — that whatever strangeness is happening to him may well be irreversible.

Her Xoçai-laced blood is his, once again, for the taking. He can see just how it makes the large vein in her sexy bare throat pulse in open invitation for his canine teeth to dig in, for not the first time, and enjoy.

He gets up, goes not to the woman on the bed, with her warm, thick blood, but into the living room and, then, into the kitchen. He begins opening and shutting cabinet doors until he finds her cache of Xoçai chocolates — two boxes: XoBiotic Squares, dark chocolate with açai and blueberry; Xoçai MEGA Squares, dark chocolate with açai and orange. He begins unwrapping the small 1 x 1.8” individually wrapped squares and popping them into his mouth, one after another after another.

He can hardly believe the ecstasy of all the undiluted-by-blood flavor suddenly exploded upon his tongue and sliding sensuously the length of his throat to his belly.

He’s still tasting the wondrous aftermath of healthy dark chocolate, açai, orange, and blueberry, later that night, at home, in his own living room, in his own easy chair, when Timothy comes in carrying a package and handing it over.

“It’s a gift to you from Melissa,” Timothy says, by way of explanation. “She was inspired by a dream and hopes you’ll know the reason why.”

The quickly discarded tissue reveals a richly dark-brown candle, dribbled with brilliant red, orange, and blue wax; it all smells deliciously of chocolate.

One fellow runs the site, writing the scripts of erotic fiction and doing all voices for Jasper's trysts with the two lesbian ladies on the other side of the duplex where he resides. Blood Revenge and The Fool......

Tis a foolish act indeed to kill the beloved for whom you are exacting revenge.

The Blood Revenge Candle was inspired by the movie Sweeney Todd. I was contacted by one of my favorite customers, Jeremy, from Indiana, and he was requesting a candle designed with a Sweeney Todd mood and theme. Well, I had not actually seen the movie due to my squeemishness for all things "slit throat", but decided to take the leap and view the production so that I could get a real feel for the setting and mood.

Well, immediately I was taken with the colors in the movie. Everything was set in the most beautiful, yet sad hues of blue, gray, and black. I also loved the stonework and buildings. So after seeing all of the killings and blood-letting that left it's red mark upon the blue hues of the backgrounds, I decided to build this candle to reflect the brick/stone settings, and of course the red blood of revenge had to be slashed across it's exterior.....

I am now also submitting the Blood Revenge Candle in The Artist Challenge's (http://www.theartistchallenge.com/) March challenge titled "The Fool". Very foolish indeed to be so taken with revenge that you do not even realize that you yourself have been fooled. And then so carelessly killing anyone and everyone that you do not even know who you are killing, to end up mistakingly killing the very person for whom you are avenging....

Now that's a real twister, isn't it? I did end up enjoying the movie and the twist of fate at the end - which I hope everyone who may read this post has already seen the movie, and I have not given the plot away!

The Artist Challenge for March should be posted sometime after the 21st. I'll be sure to let everyone know when all of the artists' submissions have been posted for viewership. It really is quite extraordinary all of the different artworks and viewpoints that come about for each challenge. And, I forgot to mention that the Blood Revenge Candle's scent is also a custom blend requested by Jeremy, which I call Bayberry Rum. He had requested Bay Rum, so I came up with my own version which is a blend of Bayberry, Clove, Patchouli, Cedar, Sage & Citrus, Cinnamon, Lemon Lavendar, Orange, and Pine. It does smell heavenly, if I do say so myself!

Alright, alright, so I do cutesy too - not everything has to be dramatic! But you gotta love this little fella and it just wouldn't be the holidays without a Gingerbread Man, now would it??

Berries in the Snow

Now, I have to admit that I cannot take full credit for this beauty ~ One of my neighbors completely fell in love with my Gothic Romance Candle and was asking me to make her one for the holidays in red and white. Well of course I was happy to oblige, and thus the beautiful Berries in the Snow Candle.

It is a tall 3X8 pillar made in a lovely berry/burgandy color draped with cascades of snowy-white wax.

I chose to offer Spiced Mulberry, Mulled Cider, and Black Cherry Scents for this design, but you should know the drill by now, you can always choose your favorites from the Studio 3B Scent List.

Hmmm.... this would be perfect in Peppermint Vanilla also, what do you think??

Copper Dream Candles

I was approached by a Designer in CA who needed some copper/brass candles for a resort they were redecorating. She wanted something rustic yet elegant. (My favorite!) That was pretty much what I had to go on - so time to get to work! I had previously made some candles with distressed paint and I thought that would be perfect for this project.

I knew that I wanted a metallic look on the candle otherwise it would be a dull copper color. So this was the outcome - a dark rust candle provides a nice undertone for the distressed copper glaze. They are very elegant and a nice size - 3X8. These are perfect for any rustic or elegant decor and also perfect for this time of year.

They are wonderful scented in Cedar or Warm Cinnamon, but you can choose your favortie scent from the Studio 3B Scent List.

Remember to get your holiday candles early to beat the rush!

Autumn Spiced Fruit Candles

I love this time of year ~ the cool breezes coming in, the leaves changing colors, the aromas that seem to emit from the kitchens of happy bakers!

I designed my Autumn Spiced Fruit Candle series to conjure up happy rememberances of Autumn both in color and appearance as well as aroma. There are four candles in this series: Spiced Mulberry Candle, Spiced Apple Candle, Spiced Pear Candle, and the Pumpkin Pie Spice Candle (pictured above).

They have a lovely rustic appearance and each contain a color combination that accents it's particular fruit. These are perfect for Thanksgiving as well as all year round, and will bring a beautiful accent to any decor.

Bayberry Dreams Forever....

Tis The Season ~ And I'm getting ready. I know that Halloween hasn't even passed by yet, but the holidays will be here before we know it.

I've been working on some new holiday candle designs and the hardest thing I think is trying to come up with something "different". There are holiday candles galore, so I have to pull out my creative cap and shoot for a different angle.

The Bayberry Dream Candle is a variation of my very popular Copper Dream Candle. It is a tall 3X8 forest green candle distressed with metallic copper and scented in one of my favorite scents, Bayberry. The Bayberry Scent that I use is a combination of Fir and Clove on a Lilac Bouquet and is scrumptous ~ You can smell the rich woodsy fir and spicy background and it fills the room with seasonal charm.

The nice thing about this candle is that it really doesn't have to be put away with the holiday decorations, it can remain as a part of your regular decor. That is one thing that I have tried to keep in mind while coming up with some new holiday candles is functionality. Something that can grace a room during the holidays and after.

With my creative cap on, I've been experimenting with what I'm calling my Luminesce Mosaic Candles. They are made to look like the candle is covered in mosaic tiles. It has been quite fun working on these, and I'll be sure to post pictures in the near future. The cool thing about these is that they can be made in any color combo and they do not have to necessarily be in holiday colors - I'm thinking of bringing this style out quite a bit during the year using different color schemes.

Along with some of my quite versitile holiday designs I do have a few fun traditional ones up my sleeve also. Wait till you see my new Gingerbread Man Candle and Gingerbread Man Scent Chips - they are too cute, and what would Christmas be without them?

Supernatural Fairy Tales

Beware My Pretty....... The intoxicatingly fragrant "Poison Apple" Candle was designed for the very alluring tales penned by Writer Dorlana Vann of Supernatural Fairy Tales. I am very proud to share with you the fact that she is my Sister, but my admiration for her work goes beyond any family favoritism. I have truly become a fan of her updated and very smart twists of the original tales, which for not her purposely giving away tidbits in the form of clues, you would not realize that this was perhaps a take on your favorite fairy tale of youth. She has taken these tales past a youthful yarn into a grown up modern read.

My favorite one so far, and believe me it's hard to choose, is Phone Calls and Dwarfs. Yes, this one is easy to guess, she's given away a large clue in the title. It is based on Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. But it is definitely not the original story - there is no princess, and really no dwarfs to speak of, but there are clues all through the story that will be hints in reference to the original.

Part of the fun in reading her stories is trying to guess which Fairy Tale the story is based on. Some of her titles include: Silverweed Muffins, Cyber Stock, Blueberry Eyes, Quiet on the Nightingale and many others including her Fairy Tale based Poems which include A Masquerade, Manipulation, I've Tasted the Bitter Unpleasantness...... to name a few.

Dorlana also invites guest writers to pen a Fairy Tale Poem and posts those also. I must say, Ahem, that even Miss Jfay has a poem posted there, but no need to rush over there on that account! There are other very talented contributers, and she welcomes all to try their hand at spinning a poetic tale ~

Supernatural Fairy Tales, as described by Dorlana, are inspired by classic Fairy Tales, modernized and sprinkled with the supernatural. All I know is that I've never read anything like them before and look forward to seeing what she conjures up next!

A True Inspiration

The Scared Stiff anthology project I worked on with Author William Maltese (of international fame) and the MLR Press Authors was one that will probably remain one of my favorites.

I was first approached by Mr. Maltese who totally took me by surprise when he told me that he had written a story with a candle in mind and wanted me to design the candle in his "A Rendering of Souls" story. That is like a dream come true for me! His story is about the soul of an avenging warrior captured in a mysterious and magical candle. A beautiful, yet deadly wedding gift for the evil King. He doesn't describe how the candle looks in the story, so I am happily challenged to take all of the clues to design a candle which would be fitting. Within his story, Mr. Maltese has even described a fictional "ancient" scent called Jasmilrose. So I am super charged at this point ~ I get to make a custom scent for this too! That was a surprise that was left to my discovery in the story ~ After much thought, sketching, and a botched first attempt, I think I finally reached my goal in designing the "A Rendering of Souls" Wedding Candle which takes on a look befitting an ancient royal wedding, and has the appearance of a trapped soul swirling about awaiting it's release. To my palpitating heart's delight, Mr. Maltese was pleased with the results also!

After the "A Rendering of Souls" Candle was complete, Mr. Maltese then thought it might be a great idea to have a candle designed for each story in the anthology ~ each of course being a ghostly tale (my favorite!).

The next story/candle I worked on was for Laura Baumbach's "Soul Desire" which is a hauntingly romantic story about being guided to love by a force unseen. She really wanted something that had a ghostly look with swirls of blues and grays.

Author Josh Lanyon's story is "Ghost of a Chance" and takes place in a deserted house on the California coast with the ghost of a 19th Century Illusionist who killed his unfaithful fiance and her lover - oh yeah, a good ghost story! For this one I immediately thought of the old classic scary movies set in a castle by the sea with the candles burning and overflowing causing the candles to take on a goulish appearance themselves. Mr. Lanyon liked this idea also and thought an eerie green glow would really set it off ~ He was certainly right. His "Ghost of a Chance Candle" is a truly ghoulish delight!

Sarah Black's story "The Ghost in the Camera" was at first a bit tricky for me. The story is set around a terrible event that happened many years before, actually a massacre during a war, but takes place in more modern times and involves a camera which has captured this horror. So I decided to focus on this for the design and have streaks of red and black randomly appearing smeared all down the candle. Nice and cheery huh?

But I would like to give my friend, William Maltese, a huge thank you for including me in this project. I took great joy in coming up with 4 different ghostly candles for 4 totally different ghostly stories!

You know, I really can't tell you why I did not make a tiger print candle while I was designing the Safari Candles, but it's a good thing I didn't! About 2 weeks later I was approached by Author Thom Jaymes to create a candle based on his Orange book cover which is adorned by a very vibrant tiger. Sugar and Sin ~ Steamy Paranormal Romance from Stella and Audra Price/Astrids Candle

It Came from Outer Space ~ And No I Haven't Been Drinking

Well, at least not that much.....

I have a true fondness for all things celestial; outerspace, planets, moons, stars, etc. So I guess you could say that I made this design for myself ~ and for all you other space nuts!

It's designed to have the look of outerspace with the planets and their moons encircling them. This candle style can of course be made in any color scheme that your most stylish self would desire.

Portrait of Spring Candle

This is my latest design feat - I wanted to create an abstract picture of "Spring" and put it on a candle. So I started by molding together bright yellow, light green, and teal waxes to make my abstract "Spring" painting then cut it into an elongated diamond shape - sort of a "portal" that you look through to see spring! And so of course I had to have scents to match the look - how about Honeysuckle.... Lemon Chiffon..... and Fresh Lime!!

Hot Lava Candle

Hot, hot, hot!!! This candle is designed to have the appearance of fire and molten rock flowing together and is made by molding the wax by hand. (Which can be a pretty hot process in itself!) Each one comes out differently and very interesting to look at. You should see me creating one of these - I also create quite a mess! Bits of wax everywhere! My husband will come in and say "Man! Stormy Night Candle

This candle is the result of one of my many experiments with wax. With this experiment I used my wax as my paint and the mold as my canvas. This type of method is sometimes a bit scary because this can result in the candle not wanting to come out of the mold - which I've had happen to me on more than one occassion! But seems I finally figured out the "secret formula"! The result is a very dramatic looking candle with the cream wax seeming to dance on the black. I did not know what to call this candle because it is so different, but my husband William said it reminded him of a stormy night - and I think he's right! Cute Puppy Candle

Hello everyone! I know it's been quite a while since my last entry - Busy creating candles! I also have a bit of news - I recently taped a segment for HGTV's "That's Clever!" They came to my home studio and taped me making my Whimisical Coffee Mug Candle. I will post an enty to let everyone know when it airs - I've been told probably in Sept 06.

Well, back to this cute Puppy Candle! I was asked by someone if I had any puppy or dog candles - they had seen my cat candles and wanted a gift for someone who loves dogs. So I searched till I found a cute cut-out and came up with this little puppy - and then I thought it would be really cute to have some dog bone shaped scented wax chips to go along with the candle - perfect gift! Of course you can order these on the Studio 3B website and see a lot of other new designs. I'll be working on some new Spring designs and offering some new scents soon also.

New Design: Harlequin Candle

The idea for this candle literally just "popped" into my head one day. So I found a cutout pattern and made the triangles using red and black waxes mixed together. The background is made of white wax to give a good contrast. I thought it turned out to be a pretty fun candle! It of course can be made in just about any color combo. What colors do you think it would look good in?

Scents of the Season Candle!

This candle is loaded with holiday scents! That's why I love making chunk candles - I can put as many scents as I want to in one candle! When I thought of designing this candle - being a holiday themed candle and using so many spiced fruit scents - I thought of fruit cake. So that's what this candle is designed to look like! With bits of colored "fruit" inside a spiced cake. There are so many scents in this candle - apple pie, spiced apple, spiced pear, pumpkin pie spice, mulberry, cherry, cinnamon, and gingerbread spice. That's all on the inside - then it's poured with spiced cake scent! You have to smell this one to believe it! If you love holiday scents and have a hard time deciding on one - this is the candle for you!! This is perfect for the entire fall and winter seasons as well as the holidays - Thanksgiving and Christmas!

Freesia and Lavendar Candles

These candles were designed to flow from a light green to a deep purple. These are the colors I associated with these scents. Freesia and lavendar are very soothing and I wanted the candles to reflect this mood. Very nice to burn while in the bath or just after a very stressful day!

These candles are poured cool to have a rustic look to the wax. This candle design can be made in any color and scent combination - the ideas are limitless! What colors would you like to see this design in? Send me some feedback with your ideas! I'd love to hear them.

Prairie Windmill Candle

This candle was designed for the Windmill Ranch Preserve in Snyder, TX. The lady that owns the ranch wanted a candle that captured the romance of the windmill on the prairie - So she sent me her letterhead which had a beautiful picture of a windmill on the praire in the sunset. So I started researching to find the perfect cutter for a farmhouse windmill. I found one at coppergifts.com they do handmade copper work. (beautiful stuff!) To finish the look I poured (2) tones of waxes to make the sunset look behind the windmill. It has a nice rustic look - perfect for a ranch or any western or rustic decor.

Cute Cate Candles

Seeing her beautiful cat art inspired me to share my cat candles with everyone today! I'm also a cat lover and have 2 beautiful cats. Many people in my family are cat lovers and that's one of the reasons I made these cat candles. I'm going to be looking in to getting different kitty shapes to make other cat candles with also. Does anyone have any ideas about what colors these would look good in? I was thinking maybe black and white would be cute - with some red somewhere on the candle also - maybe a red collar?

Autumn Fruit Candles

This is my latest design feat! I wanted to come up with a grouping of very rustic, yet elegant marbled candles. After many tries and defeats, I finally achieved the look I was going for - and here they are: The Autumn Fruit Candles

The process begins by pouring (3) wax tones at one time. The timing used while pouring created lines and ridges in the candles to complete the aged and rustic look I was going for. These were really quite a challenge!

Blue Glacier Candles

Don't ask me how I came up with this design! I really don't know! But I do remember thinking I needed to do more work in Blues - and a lot of people love candles scented in "Rain". I think that's how this project began. When I think of a certain scent and the colors I associate with that scent, my wheels start turning! So of course - rain scent - blue - white - water - ice! So my Blue Glacier Candles were born! These candles are handcrafted in the mold to resemble the sharpness of ice. I use three colors of wax: White, Blue, and Bluegreen. They really are a conversation piece!

Whimsical Coffee Mug Candles

I started working with embedded wax shapes in my candles a couple of years ago. My cousin Donna (Love ya girl!) wanted me to make a candle for her daughter with a puppy on it. I wasn't too sure about being able to accomplish this task. I thought on it for a long time - I didn't even attempt it for quite a while. I finally worked up the nerve and gave it a shot. It turned out pretty cute, but my wax figures were crooked on the candle!

But anyway, that's how I got started doing my wax embeds. Now I really enjoy making them and I'm not apprehensive anymore! After the candles come out of the mold - I put painted embellishments on some of them - like these cute Coffee Mug Candles. Don't worry - the paint is waterbased and you won't catch on fire! Some of them are painted and glittered - I'll show more of my embed candles in future posts.

Southwest Mountain Candle

How about this crazy design! This rustic abstract candle has quite a story - I first got the idea for this candle from the pattern on a pair of my capris! (We'll discuss my choice of attire - never!) It was actually an abstract floral design. When I first made this candle I made it using "Pipe Tobacco" scent, with a little Black Cherry scent to make it smell really good. But not a lot of people like that scent so I made it in "Leather" scent and "Coffee" scent. I didn't make the connection with it looking like mountains in the clouds until one of my customers referred to it as a "Smokey Mountain" candle. That name really caught on, but I decided to call it my Southwest Mountain Candle. I think it really has a Southwestern Flair and it's a fun candle to make - a little scary, but fun!

Coffee & Cream Candle Trio

Hello Fellow Bloggers! I wanted to share my Coffee & Cream Candle Trio with you - I know that stripes are not an original candle design idea! But I wanted to design a grouping of candles that were not exactly the same, but similar. I have more ideas in mind for other mixed/matched groupings that include different looks - not just different color arrangements. I'll discuss those ideas in a future post. These candles shown here are all about the coffee! There are three different coffee scents. Cappuccino Brulee', Black Coffee, and Creme' Brulee'. Each color has a different scent and a different texture to the stripe. The Black stripe is scented in Black Coffee and is shiny & glossy, the Brown stripe is scented in Cappuccino Brulee' and has a rustic finish, and the Cream stripe is scented in Creme' Brulee' and is whipped. This makes for a very interesting candle - not just your plain old stripe candle! Please share with me any ideas you have for mixed matched groupings and the colors you would like to see in these type of candles. I'll be back soon with more design ideas - I'm working on a couple of new ones now!

Rustic Cedar Candle

This candle design was created around the scent. I received an order from a lady in NM who wanted a cedar scented candle and she loves rustic decor. So, I put my wheels in motion.... What came to mind..... Well, the first thing that came into my mind was the aged cedar boards that I had seen on the wall at a local restaurant. I just loved them - so I wondered if I could make a candle that looked like those aged boards. I got to work and cut out wax"boards" - complete with wood grain and nail holes - and "stacked" them staggered to resemble a wall of old cedar boards. And of course they're scented in cedar - and it smells very good - I wondered how it would smell, and I was really surprised. It smells just like the real thing.

Puzzle Candles

I'd have to say that the Puzzle Candle is probably one of my wildest designs! I'm not really sure what made me come up with this idea, but it's a lot of fun making them, and no two ever come out the same.

I use black and white as my base colors and then bring one other color to the mix. Like Red! As you can see pictured here.

Red was then mixed with both the white (or cream) and black waxes. This gave the red more color depth in places and lighter shades in others. I then "paint" on various designs using the wax and then "build" the candle in the mold. The way the candle is put together resembles a "Puzzle" so thus it's name! This candle can be made in any color and each time it looks very different.

Sampler Candle

I'm contemplating coming up with a new line of candles simply named "Sampler Candles". They would be like a grab bag of colors and scents. You would choose a scent "category" such as: Vanillas/Coffees, Fruits, Spices, Florals, etc. Then I would make you a candle in that scent category with a variety of colors and scents (that belong in that category) For example: the candle I have pictured here is a Fruit and Spice Sampler Candle. The scents for this candle include: Mulberry, Strawberry, Champagne, Exotic, Cinnamon, and maybe a little Vanilla for additional richness in fragrance.

As your candle burns down, you will experience a nice variety of the type of scents that you enjoy. If you're worried about the colors - just email me when you place your order and tell me the tones that are your favorite and I will make a Customized Sampler Candle just for you!

William's Woodwork

My husband, William, is a professional Woodturner. He makes very beautiful handturned woodwork (working on a hand lathe). He works at his family business in Houston, TX and makes all types of colomns for home builders and various other businesses. He also works with home designers and decorators and makes lamps, furniture accessories, and other creative woodwork.

And when I can snag him, he works with me and creates wooden candle holders for our business, Studio 3B. He has come up with very numerous candle holder designs over the past few years and is always working on new ideas. He creates small pieces as well as the tall ones - like we have pictured here - We named this style "Greek Column Candle Holder". It's make from Pine - so it has the knots and creates a more rustic look. Its then handpainted to look whitewashed and aged. Looks like it came from ancient greece!

Sometimes I design candles to go with a certain piece. The candle pictured with this candle holder was not designed specifically for this holder - it's actually one of the candles I'm coming up with for my new fall line "Autumn Fruit". I will be writing more about my new line in a later post.

I wanted to share this candle design with you today also. These candles were designed for my brother, Ted who has a website about all things that Swashbuckle! The design idea came from the symbol of the Musketeers, the Fluer De Lis. I started researching and found a copper cutter that would work perfect to make the wax cut-outs. Then tried to find the right scents for this style of candle. Well Ted told me that the meaning of Fluer De Lis was Lily Flower - so of course we had to have that scent! So I found Lily of the Valley scent and also a couple of others and got to work. I wanted this candle to have an "old world" feel to it and also use colors that have meaning to the musketeers. Ted told me that the Fluer De Lis symbol is usually in gold on a blue background, but when making this type of candle, I have found that putting a light image on a darker background just doesn't work. So I would have to do it in reverse. He said that was fine. I also wanted to make this candle in a different color combo as well and came up with the Ruby and Gold color combo. When I cut out the Fluer De Lis images, I used the bottoms of the cut outs against the mold so they would have an aged look. The golden wax background has been whipped to also give it an aged appearance. So here are the Fluer De Lis Candles all finished! I'm thinking of making them in light brown and cream with a vanilla or coffee scent - what do you think?
